You will probably want to read the "Geneva Framework Whitepaper for Developers" (starting on page 11 - "Identity Federation") and "GenevaBeta1 Whitepaper Chappell" (starting on page 16) papers to get an idea of how identities can be used across domains.

Also, you may want to have a look at the "End-to-end Scenario\Authentication Assurance" sample for how to use claims to valid if a user has access to a resource.
